noun | ir·ra·di·a·tion | \i-ˌrā-dē-ˈā-shən\
1: exposure to radiation (as X rays or alpha particles)
2: the application of radiation (as X rays or gamma rays) for therapeutic purposes or for sterilization (as of food);
also: partial or complete sterilization by irradiation
3: the true definition of sonic anarchy
Formed in early 2014 by three audio engineering students attending the Centre of Arts and Technology (CATO),
Irradiation really is the true definition of sonic anarchy. Bassist/vocalist Justin Bilodeau had
a plethora of riffs and demos he recorded throughout the years, some under the name Nekrovoid.
This material attracted fellow CATO students Matt Parson and Sam Koch, who would join the band
on drums and guitar, respectively. The band would be named IRRADIATION, whose punk influenced,
speed/thrash metal style signalled a throwback to the heyday of metal, in the vein of classic crossover bands
such as D.R.I., Discharge, S.O.D., and Nuclear Assault, old school thrash and speed metal like early
Metallica and Motorhead, and even black/thrash such as Aura Noir.
With lyrics and imagery (most of the time humorous) concerning nuclear warfare, corruption, politics,
and of course, getting wasted, the band would record their first EP, "First Strike", at CATO's recording studio
in the summer of 2014 between the many other projects assigned. However, soon after graduation,
guitarist Sam Koch had to return to his hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Before leaving, Sam would record guitar parts for their 2nd EP, "Retaliate",
in the winter of 2014/2015. Irradiation then enlisted local musician Kurtis Hoekstra,
also with an education in audio engineering, as a replacement in early 2015.
The following summer, an eventual lineup change put Matt on guitar and Kurtis on drums,
since Kurtis had been learning the drums for a couple years already. Around the same time, bassist Kyle Tensen
from Salmon Arm was enlisted in early 2016, and Justin also moved to guitars. However, Kyle had to temporarily
leave the band due to personal reasons, and the band continued on as a three-piece. Irradiation then went on
the road for the first time, travelled as far as Vancouver, Victoria, Kamloops, and Calgary,
and even managed to get a last minute slot on the 2016 edition of Armstrong MetalFest.
Now preparing to record their first full-length album, the sonic assault will persist well into 2017 and beyond.
